Tile Saws: Next Generation tile cutter

Tile cutter is like a human saw except that it is used to cutting tiles. It is manually controlled. Force and mass applied by human hand generates cutting power. Where as in case of tile saw the cutter is powered by high speed motor. It requires less effort and is more effective and accurate than tile cutter.

Tile saw eliminates wastage of tiles. It is designed on the basic principle of a glass cutter. Tile is placed on the flat table and the cutter head is pushed down to cut the desired design. It is opposite to the table saw where the blade emerges underneath the table. The blade is located in vertical projection to the table. The table top has slider which can adjust the position of the tile.

The circular saw blade requires constant cooling to prevent overheating of the tool. Underneath the table is a cool water container which circulates the water around the blade. Water cleans the blade and keeps it cool at the simultaneously. Water trays are made up of plastic or steel. The steel trays are expensive where as plastic trays are cheaply available. The variable speed helps cutting tile of smaller thickness. The cutting blade is sharp and smooth.

Precautions must always be taken when working with any saw. The tile-dust is very sharp and extra precaution other than the standard must taken. Read manufacturers’ user guide for more on safety features. There are three basic designs of tile saws. Each has it own pros and corns.

Following are the three designs:

Small Fixed

It is designed like a table saw. The tile is pushed across the blade. It has a light weight and uses small blades which are cheaper compare to others. They are fit for small tile cutting jobs.

Standard Sliding

Tiles are place on a sliding tray which has rollers attached. Similar to the “small fixed” it is pushed across the blade. It is preferable when cutting large amount of tiles and are usually used by professional for tile jobs. It is can be repaired and parts are easily available.

Overhead Rail

Unlike the other two tile saws, the tile is placed in a fixed position and blade is moved across for a cut. The blade is attached to and overhead rail. The rail moves the blade across and speed can be controlled. It has no size limit as it has a flat top. It can cut tile of any width. Steel trays are mostly used. They last longer than the plastic containers.
