Metal Cutting Band Saw – When You Need To Cut More Than Wood

Anyone who has a bandsaw can tell you that they develop a mind of their own. Usually, it is a cantankerous mind that closely resembles a pack mule on a bad day. One reason find that their bandsaws are not working properly is that sometimes, the material you want to seriously cut, just isn’t within the capacity of that particular bandsaw to cut. Sometimes, this is because of the blade, and sometimes this is because of the bandsaw itself. Usually, people will have bandsaw blades that cut the common wood be it thick or thin; many people will have metal cutting band saw blades that will cut through the occasional metal pieces.

Choosing to purchase something that cuts through metal is difficult at best. Do you need a metal cutting band saw, or will a modification to your current band saw be okay? That is a question best answered by the current status of your present band saw. Sometimes, it is best to purchase a whole new unit specifically for metal cutting, and other times, it is perfectly okay to add some modification to what you currently own.

If you have an occasional metal piece that needs to be cut, then I think it is perfectly fine to purchase specific blades for metal cutting. This means that you do not make a habit of cutting metal pieces. If you cut a lot of metal, then it might be best suggested to purchase a metal cutting band saw. They are usually less expensive than their wood cutting brothers. This is at least some solace to those of us that find a need for two separate band saws.

Of course, making modifications to your band saw may be dangerous and hazardous if you are a novice. Always keep things safe. Protect yourself, your family, and your belongings. Never do anything to the band saw that would put anything at risk. Some people find it easier and healthier to simply purchase a metal cutting band saw just for that occasional metal cut.

Whether you choose a whole new machine or simply a metal cutting band saw blade, you will find the benefits come from knowing the true capacity of your band saw and yourself. Never cut metal pieces with a wood cutting blade, and never force your band saw to do something that it wasn’t designed to do. If you see smoke billowing from your band saw when you are trying to cut something, you should unplug the band saw as soon as possible and realize you may have just reached your band saws limit.
